Conductivity of PBI Membranes for High-Temperature Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

Abstract: Polybenzimidazole ͑PBI͒ film, a candidate polymer electrolyte membrane ͑PEM͒ for high-temperature ͑120-200°C͒ fuel cells, was cast from PBI/trifluoacetyl/H 3 PO 4 solution with constant molecular weight PBI powder and various acid doping levels. Conductivity measurements on these membranes were performed using an ac method under controlled temperature and relative humidity ͑RH͒. A complete set of conductivity data for H 3 PO 4 acid-doped PBI is presented as a function of temperature ͑60-200°C͒, RH ͑5-30%͒, and… Show more

“…This indicates there is a strong dependence of polymerization process on both doping level and conductivity, and is reiterated by Bai and Ho in their work. 33 Typical doping levels reported in the literature for m-PBI prepared via the conventional organic solvent route are between 6 and 10 mol PA/PBI, 14,15,[17][18][19][20][21] although some films with higher doping levels and poor mechanical properties have been achieved. 52 Average doping levels for s-PBI membranes developed in this work are between 30 and 35 mol PA/PBI, although some membranes retain 40-50 mol PA/PBI.…”

“…After approximately two hours, the solution was a uniform blue-green color and all polymer had dissolved. A 5 mL aliquot was removed at various time intervals (20,24,27,46,53, and 92 h) and quenched in ice water. Once quenched, the polymer was washed with ice water until a neutral pH was reached.…”

“…The presence of free PA at a high doping level has been observed by several authors in phosphoric acid doped PBI membranes using various techniques. 7,9,44 The very low intensity of the signal shows that the large majority of PA molecules are interacting with the polymer chains, i.e. hydrogen bonds between the protonated imidazole rings in the polymer chain and the phosphoric acid molecules occur.…”
