Confidence in controlling a SARS outbreak: Experiences of public health nurses in managing home quarantine measures in Taiwan

Abstract: Nurses' individual risk perception and prompt update of epidemic information significantly affect levels of professional confidence, a key factor influencing quarantine implementation success. Strategies to promote productive interagency collaboration and advocate participatory policy making involving health workers at all levels are needed to control effectively infectious disease outbreaks.

“…With very rare cases and relatively new disease in the region (Ng et al, 2019) and lack of knowledge of HMPX , frontline HCWs might have no confidence managing the cases if a HMPX outbreak occurred. This problem has been shown for other emerging infectious diseases; in Taiwan, for example, more than 70% of nurses expressed a lack of confidence being involved in managing severe acute respiratory syndrome (Hsu et al, 2006). The present study was undertaken to assess GPs' confidence in one of the Asian countries, Indonesia, in facing HMPX cases based on their current knowledge, skills and their workplace facilities.…”

Some of the most recent include Hsu et al. (2006), who found that 72% of 301 public health nurses responsible for epidemic control in Taiwan lacked confidence in their ability to handle SARS.…”

“…Home quarantine was also shown to reduce the incidence of pandemic influenza A in the workplace (Miyaki et al, 2011). In fact, home quarantine has been used to control the community spread of SARS in Beijing, Taiwan, Singapore, and Toronto (2003;Cava et al, 2005;Hsu et al, 2006).…”
