Configuration of control system for damage tolerance of a tensegrity bridge

Abstract: Tensegrity structures are spatial, discrete and lightweight structures that are composed of struts in compression and pre-stressed cables. Stability is provided by the self-stress state between elements independently of external actions. Tensegrity structures are attractive due to their potential for deployability, ease of tuning and high precision control. Since tensegrity structures have highly coupled behavior, placement of actuators is a primary concern when designing active control systems. This study inv… Show more

“…A group of scientists from Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne has conducted different research on smart tensegrity structures (Adam, Smith [4]; Korkmaz et al [5]; Rhode-Barbarigos et al [6]). One of their projects concerned a full-scale model of a smart modular tensegrity structure, equipped with three displacement sensors and ten actuators.…”

“…For example, fabric-formed formwork, a potential application which could make shells economically competitive and lead to innovative shell structures, has been explored in [70][71][72][73]. Other interesting topics include the development of deployable form [53,[74][75][76] and tensegrity form [77,78]. Further, bio-inspired or biomimetic design not only inspires engineers to find a cost-effective structural form with elegant appearance, but also presents emerging challenges, including the design of smart and intelligent structures.…”
