Confirmation of Phorate, Terbufos, and Their Sulfoxides and Sulfones in Water by Capillary Gas Chromatography /Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometry

Abstract: A gas chromatographic/mass spectrometric method capable of confirming phorate, terbufos, their sulfoxides, and sulfones in water is reported. Parents and their metabolites are separated in less than 5 min using a short capillary GC column and high carrier gas linear velocities. Positive ion chemical ionization mass spectrometry generates (M + H) ions indicative of the different molecular weights of the analytes and at least one confirmatory fragment ion for each analyte. Residues have been qualitatively confir… Show more

“…In an interesting turn of events for trace analysis of a difficult analyte from a complex matrix, the instrumental analysis time (∼30 min/sample) now exceeds the sample preparation time. While the use of short capillary columns could significantly reduce the analysis time, , the close-eluting matrix coextractive from the IND soil would probably necessitate an evaluation of other capillary column liquid phases. GC/MS/MS in conjunction with short capillary columns is another area warranting further investigation.…”

“…Both precursor and fragment ions observed using this technique were consistent with other methods reported in the literature for terbufos and terbufos sulfoxide. 7,16 The total DESI-MS analysis time required to confirm the presence of terbufos and diagnose organophosphate poisoning in the present case was approximately 5 min; whereas, the use of other traditional analytical techniques would have required several hours of sample preparation and analysis time before reaching a diagnosis. For example, gas chromatographymass spectrometry (GC-MS) was also used to confirm the presence of terbufos in the stomach contents sample from this case.…”

“…An exchangeable immobilized enzyme reactor for enzyme inhibition tests in flow-injection analysis using a magnetic device was described and tested for detection of 0.5 ng/L of malaoxon and carbofuran in drinking water (120). Phorate, terbufos, and their sulfoxides and sulfones were confirmed in water at 1 ppb by capillary GC/CI-MS (121). Fenitrothion metabolites were detected by capillary GC-FID and GC-FPD in gastrolavage, urine, and blood of a fenitrothion poisoning victim (122).…”
