Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Internal Consistency of the Suicidal Ideation Scale of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Among Colombian Adolescents

Abstract: The current study tested the one-dimensionality of the Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale for Suicidal Ideation (CES-D-SI) and its reliability among high school students in Santa Marta, Colombia. A total of 1,462 tenth and eleventh-grade students from public and private schools completed the CES-D-SI. The students were between 13 and 17 years ( M = 16.0, SD = 0.8), 60.3% were female, and 55.3% were in the tenth grade. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was conducted, and the chi-square, root… Show more

“…Model fit indices for good fit were set to at least 0.9 for TLI and CFI, and less than 0.08 for RMSEA and SRMR (82-85). In order to test for reliability of the scale, McDonald’s ω was calculated based on factor loadings (86, 87). Data were also examined for multivariate outliers using log likelihood contribution plotted against latent factor scores (88).…”

“…Model fit indices for good fit were set to at least 0.9 for TLI and CFI, and less than 0.08 for RMSEA and SRMR ( Hooper et al, 2007 ; Kenny, 2015 ; Asparouhov and Muthén, 2018 ; Maydeu-Olivares et al, 2018 ). To test for reliability of the scale, McDonald’s ω was calculated based on factor loadings ( McDonald, 1999 ; Suárez-Colorado et al, 2020 ). Data were also examined for multivariate outliers using log likelihood contribution plotted against latent factor scores ( Muthén, 2010 ).…”

“…The 11-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D; Radloff, 1977) assessed adolescent depressive symptoms in the past week. The CES-D is a commonly used self-report measure of depressive symptoms that has been shown to have high internal consistency and validity in adolescent samples (e.g., Radloff, 1977;Stockings et al, 2015), including Latinx adolescents (Suarez-Colorado et al, 2020). Each item was rated on a scale of 0 (rarely or none of the time) to 3 (most or all the time).…”
