Confirmatory factor analysis of the proxy version of Kidscreen-27 and relationships between health-related quality of life dimensions and body mass index and physical activity in young schoolchildren

Abstract: Highlights The full Kidscreen-27 should be used with caution for young children. Physical activity was positively associated with physical well-being. Body mass was negatively associated with physical well-being. Compared to older children, the youngest may have more negative school experiences.

“…Internal consistency estimates were stronger, but consistent with previous reports [21,22]. As well, model fit indices and factor loadings from the final invariant models were similar to those reported in a school sample of young children 5-6 years of age [22]. While inferences from these findings may provide preliminary evidence of longitudinal invariance of the KIDSCREEN-27, additional work is needed to formally test this hypothesis; repeated measures in the same sample of children, preferably over different developmental periods, is required.…”

“…Combined, the findings provide initial evidence that unbiased comparisons using the KIDSCREEN-27 can be made in samples of children as young as 2 years to adolescents 16 years of age [54]. Internal consistency estimates were stronger, but consistent with previous reports [21,22]. As well, model fit indices and factor loadings from the final invariant models were similar to those reported in a school sample of young children 5-6 years of age [22].…”

“…In a study conducted with adolescents, it was observed that the quantity of moderate physical activity was associated with better sleep quality [ 6 ]. Considering quality of life, [ 7 ] a study with 276 Norwegian children observed that physical activity was associated with physical and mental well-being. Another study found that moderate- or high-frequency sports were associated with better quality of life in adolescents [ 8 ].…”

“…While moderate reliabilities for the SDQ subscales have been reported before across studies, 43 the low reliability and the missing data for the HRQoL subscale autonomy and parent relation likely reflects an age-inappropriateness for some of the items. 44 While results for this subscale should be interpreted with caution, the overall pattern and interpretation of the results do not change if it is excluded.…”
