Confirming the Tripartite Structure of the Duke University Religion Index: A Methodological Approach

Abstract: The present study provided a methodological critique regarding psychometric investigations of the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL) and its variants. Nine hundred seventeen (630 females and 287 males) university students (M age = 19.24) completed the DUREL, the Personal Religious Inventory, and the Daily Spiritual Experiences Scale online. “…A subscale score was calculated for the intrinsic religiosity scale by summing the corresponding items; higher scores for organizational, nonorganizational, and intrinsic religiosity indicate greater religiosity. This measure has demonstrated test‐retest reliability and convergent validity 6,31 The reliability in the present sample for the intrinsic religiosity scale was excellent (Cronbach's α = .93).…”

“…We chose the DUREL as our spiritual/religious assessment tool for its combination of brevity and comprehensiveness across the domain of religious and spiritual expression. The DUREL is a reliable tool that has been validated for use in reporting and assessing religiosity across a variety of cultural and religious identities in over 100 studies from around the world (Koenig & Büssing, 2010;Lace & Handal, 2018;Lucchetti et al, 2012).…”

“…Our research question was “How does patient desire for chaplain services in an outpatient primary care clinic vary with extrinsic and intrinsic religiosity, as measured by the Duke University Religion Index (DUREL)?” We chose the DUREL as our spiritual/religious assessment tool for its combination of brevity and comprehensiveness across the domain of religious and spiritual expression. The DUREL is a reliable tool that has been validated for use in reporting and assessing religiosity across a variety of cultural and religious identities in over 100 studies from around the world (Koenig & Büssing, 2010; Lace & Handal, 2018; Lucchetti et al, 2012).…”

“…The focus of this study is the popular and highly efficient inventory, the five-item Duke University Religion Index (DUREL), which includes three components: organizational religious involvement, non-organizational involvement (independent prayer, meditation, or study), and intrinsic or subjective religiosity (Koenig & Büssing, 2010). The DUREL has been shown to converge with other commonly used inventories, for example the Santa Clara Strength of Religious Faith Questionnaire (SCSRFQ; Plante et al, 2002), a fiveitem unidimensional measure emphasizing the force of religious faith (r with DUREL total score .79, Saffari et al, 2013;.86, Storch et al, 2004), and the Personal Religious Inventory (PRI; Lipsmeyer, 1984), with 45 items and subscales for prayer, ritual attendance, and the integration of religion in cognition, affect, and behavior (r ORA, ritual attendance =.84; r NORA, personal prayer = .76; Lace & Handal, 2018).…”
