The use of a vertical well pattern results in productivity deficiency and poor development effect when developing buried hill reservoirs with complex properties. In this work, experiments are conducted to determine the best pattern for complex structure wells in buried hill reservoirs. Discretization is employed in an experimental method that uses unit cubic rocks with a size of 5 cm × 5 cm × 5 cm. The rocks are bonded in a spotty or reticular design to form a macroscopic model. Based on water flooding similarity criteria of fractured reservoir, an experimental model similar to a quarter of a five-spot unit in an actual reservoir is designed and manufactured. By selectively plugging wells in the model, various well patterns are established. Simulation results indicate that the vertical-vertical well pattern exhibits the fastest water breakthrough, fastest increase in water cut, and lowest recovery under the same pressure difference and well spacing. The horizontal-horizontal well pattern has the slowest water cut increase and the highest final oil recovery. For fishbone wells, this pattern facilitates an ideal development effect when the percolation direction is perpendicular to the plane determined by the mother bore and branch. When liquid rate, water cut, and recovery are considered, the horizontal-horizontal well pattern is recommended when conditions allow.

In fractured reservoirs, fluids injected Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) are channeled through the fracture zones and travel through highly permeable regions, failing to displace part of the oil, and decreasing oil recovery efficiency. To solve these problems, the conformance control technique is now widely used, as it allows the reservoir to be swept totally, similar to the ideal condition. In this context, polyacrylamide-based polymer gel systems can be used to block the high-permeability regions of the rock matrix, forming in situ hydrogels that block the rock pores, avoiding the channeling of the fluids, and increasing the oil production. These polyacrylamide-based hydrogels can be crosslinked by inorganic (metal ions) or organic substances, and various systems are used for conformance control. Due to the greater stability of the bond formed between the polymer and the organic crosslinker, these systems are now used in higher temperature reservoirs. In order to produce hydrogels with higher resistance to severe salinity and temperature conditions, nanoparticles are applied to form systems with good mechanical resistance, and high thermal stability. These have presented promising results for conformance control.

In order to achieve oil increment and water cut reduction in the heterogeneous oil reservoirs, a conformance control technology by using HPAM/Al 3+ systems has been widely used due to the low price and environmental friendliness. However, the complex structure and state of high-valent metal ions in brine water can directly affect the properties of the different HPAM/Al 3+ systems, which may lead to unreasonable applications. Therefore, in order to better utilize the HPAM/Al 3+ systems, the characteristics of gelation of HPAM and the three types of aluminum citrate under different salinities are systematically studied. Experimental results show that an important reason for the cross-linking reaction of HPAM/Al 3+ being affected by salinity is that the morphology and structure of the aluminum citrate complex is different under the different salinities. Although the change of characteristics of the reaction time and the cross-linking degree of the three HPAM/Al 3+ systems are different, the process of the cross-linking reactions of the three HPAM/Al 3+ systems are the same. Besides, the thermal stability of the HPAM/Al 3+ gels is weakened with the increasing of salinity regardless of the ratio of citrate ligands to Al 3+ . According to the matching relationship between salinity and HPAM/Al 3+ systems, the reaction time can be controlled to achieve the requirements of on-site construction operation for the conformance control of a given heterogeneous oil reservoir.
