Confronting inequality in the “new normal”: Hyper‐capitalism, proto‐socialism, and post‐pandemic recovery

Abstract: Post‐pandemic recovery must address the systemic inequality that has been revealed by the coronavirus crisis. The roots of this inequality predate the pandemic and even the global financial crisis. They lie rather in the uneasy relationship between labor and capital under conditions of declining economic growth, such as those who have prevailed in advanced economies for almost half a century. This paper explores the dynamics of that relationship using a simple stock‐flow consistent (SFC) macroeconomic model of… Show more

“…If, from the macro point of view, we have stopped considering development as something linked only to production or economic activity, this paradigm shift will also be necessary at the company level. We should reflect on the aspects that should be taken into account to evaluate the success of a company beyond its generation of economic results [127]. While it is true that many companies currently carry out actions that have an impact on the population well-being, these measures must be compatible with good economic results, i.e., they must be transformed into revenue or cost reduction.…”

“…The fight against the epidemic should make citizens return to normal life instead of to a "dehumanizing" new normal [5]. This new normal is unlikely to be a static equilibrium, because the pandemic shock has triggered another unexpected dynamic [6][7][8]. Social development and industrial development in both the manufacturing and service sectors, before COVID-19, could no longer effectively deal with structural inequalities (e.g., racial discrimination, unstable employment) brought about by COVID-19, and the spread of the epidemic should be effectively dealt with under the new normal [4,9,10].…”

“…Digital technologies play an important role in restarting the lives of citizens and improving their quality of life, post-pandemic. New digital technologies have been integrated into policy making, our social lives, and healthcare provision [4][5][6]. The preceding examples show that although the pandemic and lockdown restrictions have limited our offline lifestyles, the development of new digital technologies has helped us achieve an upgrade in our personal and professional lives after the pandemic.…”
