Congenital and infantile malignant melanoma of the scalp: A systematic review

Abstract: Congenital and infantile malignant melanomas are rare and typically carry poor prognosis. The purpose of this article was to review the data on congenital and infantile malignant melanomas of the scalp in order to understand its presentation, diagnosis, management, and outcomes of congenital melanoma of scalp. “…[9][10][11] Among the scalp melanomas of congenital and infantile origin, congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) constitutes the direct underlying etiology in over 50% of the cases. 11 Baldness is a well-recognized risk factor for developing melanoma in this specific anatomic locale. Scalp melanomas are more common among bald individuals and bald men are generally more frequently found than bald women.…”

“…The Congenital melanomas are very rare. According to Tariq et al [45], only ten cases of congenital scalp malignant melanoma are described in the literature, of which six arose from congenital melanocytic nevi. As in our patient, this pathology carries a poor prognosis.…”

“…144,151 Other than some of the unique circumstances in which MM arises in the prepubertal child, such as the transplacental MM and the deep melanoma in the CMN, the prognosis of the de novo MM in the young child is dependent on Breslow depth and presence or absence of epidermal ulceration. 152,153 It was once thought that prepuberal MMs have a better prognosis, but some of these cases of putative MM are likely Spitz nevi.…”
