Congenital Cyst of the Umbilical Cord

Abstract: Umbilical cord cysts warrant evaluation for structural defects and chromosomal anomalies such as trisomy 18, depending on the type of cyst. The appearance of an enlarged or "gigantic" cord has particular association with a patent urachus, often requiring operative exploration to repair the associated urachal remnant. We describe the unusual case of an umbilical cord cyst-measuring 9 cm in maximal diameter and comprising histopathological features of an urachalcyst-presenting in a healthy ex-36 week newborn wit… Show more

“…On gross examination, the tumor presents as a fusiform swelling in the cord surrounded by edema of the Wharton jelly. Umbilical cord cysts are usually classified as true cysts, which are epithelial-lined cysts derived from embryological remnants of the allantois or omphalomesenteric duct and pseudocysts, which arise from degeneration of Wharton’s jelly surrounding the cord vessels 4 . Until now, a total of 8 cases of umbilical cord hemangioma associated with cystic changes in the umbilical cord have been reported in the literature, and only one case showed an associated cyst derived from inclusion of the amniotic epithelium 5-13 .…”

“…The urachus is an embryological remnant that connects the umbilicus and anterior wall of the bladder. During the fourth or fifth months of embryonic development, the urachus is gradually occluded as a fibrous cord 1 . However, up to 30% of the human urachus is not completely occluded before birth and may persist into adulthood.…”
