Conidia survival of Aspergillus section Nigri, Flavi and Circumdati under UV‐A and UV‐B radiation with cycling temperature/light regime

Abstract: Conidial sensitivity to UV light was marked in Aspergillus section Circumdati. Conidia pigmentation could be related to UV sensitivity. Different resistance was observed within species belonging to sections Flavi and Nigri. An increase in UV radiation could lead to a reduction in the Aspergillus spp. inoculum present in the field (vineyards, nuts, cereal crops). In addition, it could unbalance the spore species present in the field, leading to a higher predominance of dark-pigmented conidia.

“…162,176,178 Other examples include the modulating effect of UV radiation on the growth of grape vines and subsequent alterations in the composition of the berry fruit and resulting juice or wine. These changes can be used by growers to experimentally manipulate conditions to alter the taste, quality of the berry, and appearance of the wine, and cross-tolerance to environmental stressors [179][180][181] including fungal infections, 182,183 and temperature. 179 In many geographical regions, a concern arising from increasing temperature is that certain crops, including grape vines, show more rapid ripening that affects quality (e.g.…”

“…Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a mycotoxin produced by Aspergillus and Penicillium species (Frisvad et al, 2004a,b) responsible for contaminating many foodstuffs including cereals (Scudamore et al, 2004), coffee (Taniwaki et al, 2003), cocoa (Bonvehí, 2004), grapes and derivatives (Abrunhosa et al, 2001;Varga and Kozakiewicz, 2006;Zimmerli and Dick, 1996). Many studies have shown that the Aspergillus section Nigri, commonly known as "Black Aspergilli", are responsible for OTA contamination of grapes (García-Cela et al, 2016;Palumbo et al, 2011;Battilani et al, 2003). In particular, A. carbonarius is considered the major species responsible, with other closely related biseriate species, A. niger and A. welwitschiae of less importance (Perrone et al, 2008;Cabañes and Bragulat, 2018).…”
