Twin pregnancy carries higher foetal and neonatal complications. This situation is worse in Sub-Saharan Africa due to lack of well-equipped perinatal complications are limited in Ethiopia. Thus, this study aimed to fill this gap. A hospital-based cohort study was conducted in Jimma University Specialized Hospital on 144 twin deliveries and 288 singleton deliveries from December 2012 to November 2013 in obstetrics ward of Jimma university specialized hospital. Data were collected through face face interview by using structured-questionnaire and analyzed by SPSS V.20.0. The relative risks of twin deliveries were higher for the occurrence of low birth weight, need for neonatal intensive care unit admissions, early neonatal deaths and preterm births as compared with singleton deliveries. Unique foetal complications like both twin deaths, co discordant twin and gross congenital malformation were common in twin deliveries conclusion, women with twin pregnancy were at a higher risk of ante foetal and neonatal complications. Therefore, the mother during pregnancy, labour and delivery, and both for the mother and her new born during postpartum period.

Conjoined twins represent a rare type of monoamniotic twins. Ultrasound assessment during the first trimester can facilitate the diagnosis, however further assessment by colour Doppler studies, 3D imaging, fetal echocardiography and fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is usually required in order to determine the specific fetal abnormalities and to guide appropriate pregnancy management. This case report presents a rare case of conjoined twins complicating a dichorionic-diamniotic triplet pregnancy, achieved after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and blastocyst transfer. A 44-year-old woman was referred for chorionicity determination to our Fetal Medicine Centre due to suspicion of conjoined twins in a triplet pregnancy. Ultrasound assessment at 11 weeks demonstrated a dichorionic triplet pregnancy which was also complicated by a rare type of conjoined twins (thoracoomphalopagus) and after a successful embryo reduction a neonate of 2200 g was delivered by caesarean section at term. The accurate diagnosis and early detection of conjoined twins by a fetal medicine specialist is crucial, especially as far as multiple pregnancies with three or more fetuses are concerned.

Objective: To present a case of conjoined twins (CTs) in a triplet pregnancy after frozen blastocyst transfer and a literature review. Design: Case report. Setting: Reproductive medicine center of a university teaching hospital. Case Report: A 24-year-old patient underwent in vitro fertilization (IVF) and received two frozen blastocyst transfers. Sequential examination by transvaginal ultrasonography and transvaginal multifetal pregnancy reduction were performed during early pregnancy. Ultrasound images of the fetus in the gestational sac were assessed. Two gestational sacs were found in the uterus at 30 days after the embryo transfer (ET). A germ with primitive heart beat was observed in each sac. At the seventh week of gestation, one heart was still observed in each sac. At the tenth week, a single fetus was observed in one sac, whereas thoracopagus CTs with one heartbeat were seen in the other sac. Selective fetal reduction of the CTs was performed at the 11 th week. Unfortunately, abortion occurred at the 20 th week because of premature rupture of membranes. Conclusions: The authors presented a case of CTs that occurred after the transfer of two frozen blastocysts, and suggested that factors such as ovulation induction, intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), culture time and culture condition, assisted hatching and blastocyst transfer, and maternal age might be responsible for the CTs. The importance of early transvaginal ultrasound in pregnancies resulting from assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) is emphasized. Selective embryo reduction is an appropriate choice for the management of these pregnancies.
