Conjunction, Disjunction and Iterated Conditioning of Conditional Events

Abstract: Starting from a recent paper by S. Kaufmann, we introduce a notion of conjunction of two conditional events and then we analyze it in the setting of coherence. We give a representation of the conjoined conditional and we show that this new object is a conditional random quantity, whose set of possible values normally contains the probabilities assessed for the two conditional events. We examine some cases of logical dependencies, where the conjunction is a conditional event; moreover, we give the lower and upp… Show more

“…Based on the structure of (1), i.e. l| " l^ `Ppl| q s , which we use with l " B|K and " A|H, the notion of iterated conditional pB|Kq|pA|Hq is defined as follows (see, e.g., [44,45,48]): 10 Definition 4. Given any pair of conditional events A|H and B|K, with AH ‰ H, let px, y, zq be a coherent assessment on tA|H, B|K, pA|Hq^pB|Kqu.…”

“…The expected value of the indicators of an event is called its prevision (Augustin et al, 2014;Coletti & Scozzafava, 2002;de Finetti, 1974;Walley, 1991). The indicators are uncertain quantities (de Finetti, 1974;Gilio & Sanfilippo, 2013;Stalnaker & Jeffrey, 1994). In the literature, propositions and indicators are 1 Sometimes the subjective interpretation of probability is called "Bayesian", often however, for no other reason than to avoid the term "subjective".…”

“…Conditionals may be nested or iterated if the indicator values are combined with probabilities; degrees of belief are then measured by previsions in conditional random quantities. “…We use a notion of conjunction which, differently from other authors, is defined as a suitable conditional random quantity with values in the unit interval (see, e.g. [20,21,23,24,36]). We study the relationship between our notion of conjunction and the notion of Frank tnorm.…”
