This chapter examines time adverbials in English and Norwegian as evidenced in two corpora of news articles. The adverbials are identified through a manual, bottom-up procedure, and their syntactic realizations, semantic types and positions are analysed. The comparison includes the lexical realizations of time adverbials in both languages, partly through the lens of lexical priming. Similarities between the languages include the distribution of syntactic and semantic types of time adverbials. Crosslinguistic differences in adverbial placement are evident in clause-medial position, where English is more restrictive than Norwegian. The lexical comparison shows that the languages may differ in how similar meanings are realized. Furthermore, the lexical priming of some frequent lexical items reveals lexeme-specific and possibly register-specific patterns.

Single-step joining of dissimilar material combinations between ultra-high-strength steels and high-strength aluminium alloys with sufficient mechanical joint properties by using conventional resistance spot welding equipment has not been reported yet. In this research paper, a novel single-step joining technology, so-called self-penetrating resistance element welding, is introduced. First, the motivation for this novel joining technology, the state of the art in joining, and the process characteristics are presented. In the results section, the welding rivet geometry is first determined using forming simulations and validated by head tensile tests. Followed by the description of the welding process and its characteristics, the mechanical joint properties are reported. The results show that a numerically optimised welding rivet geometry can guarantee sufficient joint strength. By this welding rivet geometry, a thermally assisted penetration of aluminium and therefore welding to steel is possible with and without adhesive. Furthermore, it is shown that the welding process can be designed by means of simulations. Finally, the shear tensile tests prove that an overall sufficient joint strength is ensured.

Concessive subordination in English and Norwegian

This paper investigates concessive markers, primarily subordinators, in the English-Norwegian Parallel Corpus. The initial question is how English and Norwegian concessive markers compare with regard to their frequencies and syntactic functions, both intra- and cross-linguistically. Overall, the languages are relatively similar. However, individual concessive markers differ in frequency, syntactic flexibility and possibly formality in original texts in both languages. The second research question concerns the placement of concessive clauses. Again the languages are rather similar, but there is variation within both languages, with subordinators having individual positional preferences. Finally, the translations of the subordinators are examined. Concessive markers are overrepresented in Norwegian translations and underrepresented in English translations compared to originals. While translation correspondences are often congruent, the mutual correspondence between pairs of subordinators is low. Changes made in translation suggest that Norwegian chooses coordination more often than English, thus displaying less syntactic complexity.
