Connected Coverage Optimization for Sensor Scheduling in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract: Quality-of-service in terms of network connectivity and sensing coverage is important in wireless sensor networks. Particularly in sensor scheduling, it must be controlled to meet the required quality. In this paper, we present novel methods of the connected coverage optimization for sensor scheduling using a virtual hexagon partition composed of hexagonal cells. We first investigate the optimum number of active sensors to fully cover an individual hexagonal cell. According to the best case, a sensor selection… Show more

“…Recent years, many experts, scholars at home and abroad have carried out plenty of researches thoroughly and carefully. Adulyasas et al 16 take the symmetry of the regular hexagon of a given circle as the research object and propose the connected coverage optimization algorithm, which can reduce the overlapping coverage area to improve the effective coverage of the whole monitoring area. Sun et al 17 propose the enhanced coverage control algorithm.…”

“…However, their proposed scheme requires the centralized network architecture, which is not desirable for the WANETs. Furthermore, the authors in [21] presented a method of coverage optimization for sensor scheduling in duty-cycled WSNs using a virtual hexagon partition composed of hexagonal cells. However, they assumed that the nodes are aware of their locations, which requires the Global Positioning System (GPS) or other positioning systems in practice.…”

“…Coverage control technology is an important basic research issue and is one of the hotspots in the field of wireless sensor network, and coverage quality affects the network lifetime directly [18]. In recent years, many experts at home and abroad have carried out research on the coverage technology in wireless sensor network elaborately and profoundly as it was developed and widely used.…”
