“…However, in the conventional RC joint system, additional steel bars need to utilize to improve the shear resistance, 21 which increases the difficulty of construction. Therefore, Zhou et al 22,23 proposed a relatively new detailing for TRC column-RC beam joints in which the joint zone was encased by the steel tube with opening holes (Figure 1B). In particular, the joint tube is used to improve the joint strength and the opening holes are used to penetrate the longitudinal rebars in RC beams.…”

“…The hysteretic behavior of an isolated column or a joint would be different from that in the whole structural system. In this study, a pseudo-static test was conducted on two 1/2 scale two-story two-bay frames containing circular TRC (CTRC) columns and RC beams, in which an innovative beam-column connection proposed by Zhou et al 22,23 with the joint zone encased by the steel tube with opening holes (Figure 1B) was employed and a relatively thin-walled column steel tube (i.e., diameter-to-thickness ratio D/t = 120) was considered. The column-beam strength ratio (η) was considered as the main parameter in the test, where two different η values (3.0 and 0.9) were taken to achieve different failure modes.…”

“…However, research on axial compression behavior of other types of joint systems can be referred. Zhou et al [12], [13] carried out axial compressive tests on interior, exterior and corner tubed RC column to RC beam joints. For circular joints, three stiffening methods including strengthening stirrups, steel tube with rectangular openings, and horizontal beam haunches were adopted.…”

“…Nowadays, tubed columns exhibit a variety of forms, such as steel tube confined concrete column (Guo et al, 2019; Hoang and Fehling, 2017; Liu et al, 2018), FRP confined concrete column (Albanesi et al, 2007; Hadi et al, 2015; Mohamed and Haitham, 2012; Zhu et al, 2005), PVC confined concrete column (Abdulla, 2017; Askari et al, 2020; Wang and Yang, 2012), and PVC-FRP Confined Concrete (PFCC) column (Fakharifar and Chen, 2016; Fang et al, 2020; Jiang et al, 2014a; Yu et al, 2018), etc. Compared with the researches on component level of these tubed columns, the studies dealing with the connection between the tubed column and Reinforced Concrete (RC) beam were still limited (Han et al, 2009; Zhou et al, 2017a).…”

“…Several similar strengthening measures were also adopted to deal with the tubed column and RC beam joint, such as tube with rectangular openings, horizontal haunches (Zhou et al, 2017b), internal diaphragms (Gan et al, 2018), and stiffening ribs (Zhou et al, 2017a). A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the performances of those suggested composite joints and test results showed that the connections were feasible and exhibited favorable seismic performance.…”
