Consciousness: a unique way of processing information

Abstract: In this article, I argue that consciousness is a unique way of processing information, in that: it produces information, rather than purely transmitting it; the information it produces is meaningful for us; the meaning it has is always individuated. This uniqueness allows us to process information on the basis of our personal needs and ever-changing interactions with the environment, and consequently to act autonomously. Three main basic cognitive processes contribute to realize this unique way of information … Show more

“…This lack of attention is all the more surprising given that some of the pioneers of neurobiology, psychology, and physiology found a central place for energy in their theories, including Hermann von Helmholtz (in Cahan, 1995 ), Gustav Fechner (1905) , Sigmund Freud ( Gay, 1988 ), William James ( James, 1907 ), and Charles Sherrington (1940) 2 . There are, however, signs that attention is turning again to energetic or thermodynamic-related theories of consciousness in various branches of science ( Deacon, 2013 ; Collell and Fauquet, 2015 ; Annila, 2016 ; Street, 2016 ; Tozzi et al, 2016 ; Marchetti, 2018 ) and in philosophy of mind ( Strawson, 2008 , 2017 ).…”

“…How would other theories of consciousness address the possibility of consciousness without content? For example, consciousness has been conceptualized as a meaning-making process or producing information ( Marchetti, 2018 ). Marchetti (2018) focusing on the content of conscious experience say that “the content of CI coincides with its form.” Given this conceptualization, it is not clear how consciousness without concept can be conceptualized.…”

“…However, such attempts at understanding consciousness are not grounded in the consciousness process as part of a spontaneous process. Theoretical work in this direction has been initiated by Marchetti (2018) in which he details how consciousness is a 'unique way' of processing information, yet without demonstrating what this 'unique way' could be physically. As well, Hameroff (2010) who first explored the idea of a 'conscious pilot' embodied in the activity of subneuronal structures forming a holoscope (i.e., cognized "wholes").…”
