Consensus Statement of the International Summit on Intellectual Disability and Dementia Related to Nomenclature

Abstract: The 2016 International Summit on Intellectual Disability and Dementia examined the terminology used to define and report on dementia in publications related to intellectual disability (ID) and found mixed uses of terms associated with dementia or causative diseases. It noted that language related to dementia in the ID field often lacks precision and could lead to a misunderstanding of the condition(s) under discussion. Most articles related to ID and dementia reporting clinical or medical research generally pr… Show more

“…It should be noted that the BRIEF-P (BRI index) and the CAMCOG-DS, in addition to providing a quantitative basis for each stage of the GDS-DS, also cover the symptoms of the two most frequent forms of AD onset in the DS population, either the amnestic [ 45 , 46 ] or the behavioral variants [ 47 , 48 ].…”

“…Furthermore, in our context, the GDS is the instrument of choice that determines the introduction and withdrawal of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment in patients with AD [ 43 , 44 ]. Therefore, it would be desirable to arrange a global deterioration rating scale which contemplates the amnesic [ 45 , 46 ] and the behavioral [ 47 , 48 ] forms of onset classically described in AD-DS. Consequently, such a scale would improve both the response to health needs according to the time point of disease progression and provide researchers in this field with a common language in our context.…”

“…Although clinical or medical research follows structured descriptions of dementia or related terms to ID and dementia, other areas often lack precision. 33 There is erratic use of language, despite established core methods and criteria in diagnosis, and insufficient comprehension of the dissimilarity within types of dementia. Consistency in terminology benefits the systematization of protocols, procedures and results, and aids in providing comprehensive communication.…”

“…Terminología y uso del lenguaje. El uso del lenguaje relacionado con la DI y la demencia carece a menudo de precisión (Janicki et al, 2017). La investigación clínica o médica relacionada con la DI y la demencia generalmente contiene definiciones estructuradas de demencia o términos relacionados, pero el lenguaje en los artículos de atención social tiende a una menor precisión.…”
