Consequences of Anosognosia on the Cost of Caregivers’ Care in Alzheimer’s Disease

Abstract: U n c o r r e c t e d A u t h o r P r o o fJournal of Alzheimer's Disease xx (20xx) Abstract. 11Background: Anosognosia is common in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and it is frequently related to an increase in time of care demand.

“…Third, BPSD are associated with anosognosia, limiting the individual’s ability to adjust their behaviors, take necessary precautions, and seek help ( 34 ). This poor insight has been shown to increase their care needs and use of support services, which are critical resources during this pandemic ( 35 ). Fourth, individuals with BPSD and severe cognitive impairment depend on others for their basic needs which may involve close physical contact and potential exposure to a range of situations including personal care, feeding, and behavioral support for complex activities of daily living ( 36 ).…”

“…The present study aimed to characterize change in awareness of memory abilities and its relationship to Aβ burden in a large cohort (N = 1,070) of individuals across the disease spectrum (CN, MCI, and dementia). Specifically, we aimed to (1) examine the change in memory self-awareness by baseline amyloid burden and clinical stage, (2) determine the onset of unawareness of memory deficits over the course of AD progression, and (3) determine predictive capabilities of low and/or high awareness for clinical progression. Overall, we hypothesized that altered memory self-awareness would be associated with baseline Aβ burden and that these initial pathophysiological changes would be associated with decreased memory self-awareness after longitudinal follow-up.…”
