Consequences of Polylactide Stereochemistry on the Properties of Polylactide-Polymenthide-Polylactide Thermoplastic Elastomers

Abstract: A series of polylactide-polymenthide-polylactide triblock copolymers containing either amorphous poly(D,L-lactide) or semicrystalline, enantiopure poly(L-lactide) or poly(D-lactide) end segments were synthesized. Small-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry data were consistent with microphase separation of these materials. The Young's moduli and ultimate tensile strengths of the semicrystalline triblock copolymers were 2- and 3-fold greater, respectively, than their amorphous analogs. Sy… Show more

“…This difunctional PM was used as the initiator for ROTEP of (±)-lactide to yield PLA-PM-PLA triblock copolymers used as TPEs (Figure 3). Sample PLLA-PM-PLLA (13-33-13) displayed a strain at break of 765% with ultimate tensile strength of 19.5 MPa [51,52]. With 30 vol% of poly(6-methyl-ε-caprolactone) (PMCL) as the elastic block, 1880% strain at break was achieved with 10.2 MPa ultimate stress [53].…”

“…Renewable ABA triblock copolymers of (À)-menthide (B) and lactide (A) have been prepared by sequential ROPs aiming at the production of thermoplastic elastomers and pressure-sensitive adhesives [97][98][99]. Carvone is a monocyclic monoterpene vinyl ketone undergoing dimerization, but no polymerization, upon treatment with sodium amide.…”
