“…Of these the most cited detrimental effects because of tilapias in the region have been alleged in the case of the near extinction of the small endemic goby (sinarapan), Mistichthys luzonensis (Smith), in Lake Buhi, in the Philippines (Baluyut 1983; Soliman 1994). However, a critical examination of the available evidence suggests that the decline of sinarapan was probably a result of a number of factors, the least influential of these being the presence of the exotic cichlid (De Silva et al 2004).…”

“…The IUCN Red List includes 27 fish species from the lakes of this island alone out of a total of 29 for Indonesia as a whole. Dramatic declines in the abundance of Sinarapan (Mistichtys luzonensis: Gobiidae) from Lake Manapao (a mountain lake designated as a sanctuary for this Philippines endemic in 1982) have been attributed to the combined effects of exotic predators and drainage basin degradation (Soliman 1994). Surprisingly, this tiny (Ͻ2-cm-long) goby was once the basis of an important fishery, and is probably the world's smallest commercial fish.…”
