Conservation and reservation of non-vascular plants in Tasmania, with special reference to lichens

Abstract: Conservation management of the Tasmanian flora is now focusing on non-vascular plants. Major problems include the low level of information on the composition of the flora and the low number of competent specialists available to deal with the plants. Collation of information from literature and from collections in herbaria is required to establish exactly which data are available and their reliability. An environmental domain analysis covering all ecosystems would indicate which environments were under-represen… Show more

“…Our results support the suggestion that the best strategy for cryptogam conservation is to ensure that all vascular plant species, vascular plant communities, and their successional states are well reserved (Brown et al 1994; Buchanan & May 2003; Newmaster et al 2005). Although a strong congruence with vegetation and environmental variables is reassuring for cryptogam conservation through reservation, efforts to conserve cryptogams should not rest solely on prediction by surrogates.…”

“…Tasmanian vascular plant species and the forest communities they form are well documented (Reid et al 1999). Considerable progress has also been made in research on lichen and bryophyte species and communities (Kantvilas 1988(Kantvilas , 1990Brown et al 1994;Jarman et al 1994;Moscal & Kirkpatrick 1995;Kantvilas et al 1996;Jarman & Kantvilas 1997;Moscal et al 1997). In contrast, for Tasmanian macrofungi, there is a field guide to common species in rainforests (Fuhrer & Robinson 1992), but no comprehensive modern taxonomic treatments for any groups and few studies at the community level.…”

“…Bryophytes and lichens are important components of biodiversity. Their species richness may be equal to or greater than that of vascular plants at given sites (Slack 1977;Brown et al 1994;. However, studies of their diversity remain scarce and mostly focused on moist habitats, particularly in the northern hemisphere, and few address lichen diversity or dry habitats (Slack 1977;Lee & La Roi 1979;Soderstrom 1981;Stark & Castetter 1987;Gradstein etal.…”
