Conservation of some rare and endangered plants from Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract: Malaysia has approximately 15,000 species of vascular plants. Its flora is distributed between two major geographical regions; Peninsular Malaysia on mainland Asia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia has over 8,300 plant species and Sabah and Sarawak in a recent estimate have about 12,000 species. Total species endemism for Peninsular Malaysia is about 30%; its tree endemism is 26.3%. For Sabah and Sarawak, the endemism level is higher, recently revised figures gave… Show more

“…Limestone landscapes are comprised of several diverse plant communities and are floristically unique compared to other forest types. The varied ecological niches and intricate terrains that can be found within the limestone landscapes result in high species diversity of the area (Asanok and Marod 2016;Clements et al 2006;Saw et al 2010). The surface rock layer of limestone landscapes has innumerable perforations and hollow areas that allow rainwater to drain fast underground.…”

“…Moreover, the level of endemism is also higher in Sabah and Sarawak with 42% endemism in seed plants compared to Peninsular Malaysia with about 26.4% (Ng et al 1990). The higher endemism in Sabah and Sarawak is explained by the presence of higher mountains in Sabah and Sarawak and a greater diversity of soils and geological formations compared to Peninsular Malaysia (Saw et al 2010).…”

“…There are major differences in the tree flora of Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia (Saw et al 2010). In general, East Malaysia harbors a richer tree flora compared to Peninsular Malaysia with Sabah and Sarawak having on average 44% more species than Peninsular Malaysia (Saw & Chung 2007).…”
