Conservation status assessment of the highest forests in the world:Polylepis flavipilaforests as a case study

Abstract: Polylepis forests are one of the most threatened high Andean ecosystems, with 15 species and eight subspecies being categorized as critically endangered, vulnerable or near threatened by IUCN. However, their conservation status is poorly evaluated and could be outdated. As a case study, we evaluated Polylepis flavipila, a species endemic to the Peruvian central Andes, that is categorized as Vulnerable in Peru and is not mentioned in the Global Threatened Species Red List. We used two methods to categorize P. f… Show more

“…For some wildlife taxa and endemic species, only estimates of their numbers are available, but no detailed record is available, or there are old lists or preliminary lists that may contain synonyms or errors. The list of threatened species of flora and fauna is not up to date; thus, the Peruvian IUCN red list lacks information on individual species' population trends and there is also an under-or overestimation of the species conservation status [84]. Being a megadiverse country, Peru will have to cope with the difficulty of preserving natural landscapes, while sustaining economic growth under an agriculture-and resource-based economy [3,85].…”

“…It is protected within the Nor Yauyos-Cocha Landscape Reserve. However, its populations are fragmented and severely threatened by overgrazing and logging and forest cover has been reduced by 53% between 1975 and 2020, based on satellite images ( Ames-Martínez et al 2021 ). We assess P. flavipila as Endangered (B1a+B2a, C2a).…”
