Conserving native trees increases native bird diversity and community composition on commercial office developments

Abstract: In cities, woody vegetation provides critical shelter, nesting and foraging habitat for bird species of interest. Human actions—including development and landscaping choices—determine vegetation community composition and structure, making these choices critically important to urban bird conservation. A better understanding of how bird communities are impacted by parcel-scale actions can help guide policy and management best practices to improve matrix habitat quality and quantity. Here, I examined how bird hab… Show more

“…Exposure to nature, including visibility of nature, may be an important source of support for mental health [20,67,68]. Visual exposure to nature through classroom windows may be particularly relevant for children in school settings because children spend extended periods of time at school, mostly indoors, and may have limited opportunities to physically engage with nature outdoors.…”

“…One common example of this issue is the use of bird point counts in urban ecology research at the centroid of a plot or park. Using point counts changes the unit of observation and analysis from the sampled property unit to the point count circle (Dyson, 2020; Watson, 2003). Explaining the relationship between the unit of observation and unit of analysis is an important aspect of adequately reporting study design.…”

“…This finding seems to be correlated with more diverse native plants in GBL. Many bird species are generally sensitive to the characteristics of plant communities, including the presence of native plants (Trathnigg & Phillips, 2015;Dyson, 2020) in the understorey so it is possible that the diversity is higher in GBL where there are more native plant species compared to GBC.…”
