A number of factors were investigated to determine possible reasons for why the Strip Effluent (SE) can sometimes have higher than expected pH values and/or sodium content, both of which have prescribed limits. All of the factors likely have some impact on the pH values and Na content.
Cesium Loading Effects on SE pHHigher cesium concentrations in the feed can affect the pH in the SE. However, the effect is small, and largely localized to the first 2 contacts. Therefore, this test set indicates that increases in the cesium in the feed (such as the 0.8 Ci/gal for Salt Batch 8), should not challenge the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) SE pH limit.
