Considerations for using personal Wi-Fi enabled devices as “clickers” in a large university class

Abstract: Interactive student response systems, commonly referred to as clickers, have increased in popularity in higher education classrooms as a means to improve engagement and enhance learning. Clicker systems come with handheld devices as well as a radio frequency receiver. A Wi-Fi connection to the receiver is possible, enabling students to use their personal smartphones, tablets, or laptops instead of the handheld device. The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of students using their personal… Show more

“…The clickers and Wi-Fi devices provided students with a way to receive instant formative feedback and provided the instructor with an opportunity to shift the instructional emphasis as needed based upon where students in the class were on a particular topic. Students were given the opportunity to utilize their own devices to take advantage of the findings of Katz et al (2017) [ 11 ], which indicated that students preferred using personal devices over clickers.…”

“…One of the issues we as teachers had not considered was the need for an extensive wifi network across the institution if the modified YACRS system is to work optimally. Previous research has found this to be a problem when using personal wifi-enabled devices (Katz et al, 2017). The Computing Science students brought this to our attention, as they use YACRS more than we do: it is built into much of their course assessment and their experience is that, once the class size grows over approximately fifty students, the system is unable to handle it, the wifi becomes patchy and students are unable to access the questions.…”

“…The textbook market, which has a new class of motivated buyers every semester, is also rapidly changing, with students actively exploring alternatives in used and grey textbook markets and instructional technologies regularly coming into and falling out of favour. 19 The market also has clearly defined gaps to fill in the form of recurring courses for which no textbook currently exists. 20 In this rapidly changing market, libraries and presses are uniquely positioned to develop services and materials that leverage their specific expertise by grounding their work in the needs of a specific department, campus, or community.…”
