Consistency of Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale Factor Structure across a Broad Spectrum of Schizophrenia Patients

Abstract: Background: The Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) has been the workhorse of psychopathology assessment in studies of schizophrenia and related psychotic disorders for over 40 years. Our goal was to evaluate the discriminant validity of the BPRS across the broad spectrum of persons with schizophrenia. Sampling and Methods: The total sample of 565 subjects with schizophrenia (84%) or schizoaffective disorder (16%) came from eight separate studies conducted under the aegis of the UCLA Clinical Research Center… Show more

“…The 24-item Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS; Overall and Gorham, 1962) assessed positive and depression symptoms (Kopelowicz et al, 2008). The Clinical Assessment Interview for Negative Symptoms (CAINS; Horan et al, 2011) is a 13-tem instrument that yields two subscales, Motivation and Pleasure (MAP) and Expression, which measure the two primary negative symptom factors.…”

“…33,34 The expanded BPRS is a 24-item, self-report measure which quantifies the level and presence of psychopathology on a 7-point Likert-type scale ranging from ''not present'' to ''extremely severe.'' We parsed the BPRS into the standard 4-factor solution of the 24-item BPRS 35 (negative, positive, agitation-mania, and depression-anxiety). ICC between raters at the same site and between sites ranged from 0.82 to 0.87.…”

The BPRS total score as well as BPRS mean subscales for positive symptoms and negative symptoms were used to characterize the patient sample.…”
