Consistency rationing in the cloud

Abstract: Cloud storage solutions promise high scalability and low cost. Existing solutions, however, differ in the degree of consistency they provide. Our experience using such systems indicates that there is a non-trivial trade-off between cost, consistency and availability. High consistency implies high cost per transaction and, in some situations, reduced availability. Low consistency is cheaper but it might result in higher operational cost because of, e.g., overselling of products in a Web shop. In this … Show more

“…However, these work differentiate from ours in the sense that they focus on data whereas we concentrate on service. [11,22,28,46] are the closest work to our work. In particular, [22] propose an approach for trading consistency and scalability of transactional processes in the cloud, based on the needs of an application.…”

“…[11,22,28,46] are the closest work to our work. In particular, [22] propose an approach for trading consistency and scalability of transactional processes in the cloud, based on the needs of an application. The notion of category they proposed is similar to the region policies, but they mainly aim for storage levels.…”

“…There is often a non-trivial trade-off between cost, consistency, and availability [Kraska et al, 2009]. Weak consistency is often considered sufficient for applications deployed in public clouds [Fetai and Schuldt, 2012].…”

“…Investigated the consistency properties provided by commercial clouds and made several useful opinions [12]. Existing commercial clouds generally limit strong consistency promises to small datasets (Google's Megastore and Microsoft's SQL Data Services), or provide only eventual consistency (Amazon's simpleDB and Google's BigTable) [13]. The consistency requirements differ over time depending on tangible accessibility of the data, and the authors deliver techniques that make the system dynamically adjust to the consistency level by monitoring the state of the data.…”
