Consistent engineering information model for mechatronic components in production automation engineering

Abstract: Software engineers of production automation systems have to deal with a great number of various tasks for example programming the automation code, simulation or visualization of the production system. For the virtual or real commissioning of the system, further tasks like defining software or hardware communication interfaces are needed. Most engineering tools used by the software engineers only support one or few of the tasks. As a consequence, there is a great heterogeneous industrial tool landscape, which h… Show more

“…Cyber-physical systems (CPSs) ( Figure 4) are distributed, heterogeneous systems connected via networks, and usually associated with the concept of the Internet of Things (IoT) [10]. The complexity and the number of components in production automation systems have been increasing [11]. Software for controlling industrial processes or machines is commonly executed on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), which are digital computers specifically designed for the use in industrial environments, that is, environments with extended temperature ranges and high electrical noise and vibrations.…”

“…Following the publication of the AML standard IEC 62714, the implementation of a consistent engineering information model with AML has to be verified [44]. Aicher reports on a project where consistent verified engineering information has been implemented using AML [3].…”

“…As noted by Aicher et al [3], for many years the complexity and the number of components in production automation systems have been increasing. Additionally, the size and complexity of the embedded software inside the components are also increasing rapidly.…”
