Consolidation by Prefabricated Vertical Drains with a Threshold Gradient

Abstract: This paper shows the development of an approximate analytical solution of radial consolidation by prefabricated vertical drains with a threshold gradient. To understand the effect of the threshold gradient on consolidation, a parametric analysis was performed using the present solution. The applicability of the present solution was demonstrated in two cases, wherein the comparisons with Hansbo’s results and observed data were conducted. It was found that (1) the flow with the threshold gradient would not occur… Show more

“…Terefore, the analysis of clay consolidation should allow for a time-stepping procedure that takes into account timebased incremental loading [59]. In a specifc context, the main intention of introducing drains to clay soil is to accomplish the consolidation process within predefned time duration, to attain a required minimum excess pore pressure, or to attain the required degree of consolidation [60,61]. In relation to this, the analysis conducted in the current study targeted at completing the consolidation process within a certain time duration, which can possibly be achieved via the introduction of a staged construction approach.…”

“…Bu eşleme yöntemlerinde dren aralığı ve/veya dren etrafındaki zeminin permeabilitesinde değişiklikler yapılmaktadır. Düşey drenlerin sayısal analizinde taş kolonlar için de kullanılan birim hücre yaklaşımı kullanılmaktadır [22]; [23]. Bu çalışma kapsamında taş kolon ve düşey drenlerin sayısal analizleri için eksenel simetrik birim hücre yaklaşımı kullanılmıştır.…”

“…Under this condition, an approximation to the e ective ow velocity described by non-Darcian ow [10,13] can be provided by the model of water ow in clay with a threshold gradient. In this way, there has been some progress in consolidation theories of clays with a threshold gradient [16][17][18][19][20].…”
