Consortium Research

Abstract: Design-oriented IS research aims at delivering results which are of scientific rigor and of practical relevance at the same time. Recently, a number of guidelines have emerged helping researchers to do design-oriented IS research. However, these guidelines lack of supporting the researcher in gaining access to and capturing knowledge from the practitioner community. This paper proposes a method for Consortium Research, a multilateral form of collaborative research in which practitioners grant researchers acces… Show more

“…In addition, one of the key theoretical aspects of this paper, was to emphasize the role of the appointment coordination as a key process in the age of service economy [6]. The requirements for the ESM system were researched by using a Consortium Research method [7], [8] which is a design-oriented research method based on the "design science" approach [9], [10]. The main goal and reason of why to use the design-oriented methods is to engage in the research process different stakeholder groups with different points of views and to analyze the research object from different perspectives.…”

“…The iterative nature of the design science enables to validate the research artefact in different contexts and different environments, making it better and better with every iteration. The design science process consists of Analysis, Design, Evaluation and Diffusion (for a detailed explanation please see [7], [8]). This process used in a specific context and under concrete conditions can be named as the Consortium Research method.…”

“…In preparation of this paper, two cycles of this research approach have been conducted. Table 1 contains 7 guidelines on design science research (Oesterle and Otto, 2010) and indicates how these apply to this paper. (March and Smith, 1995).…”

“…Because this contribution serves as the problem-centered initiation of our long-term design science research project [18], [19], it is necessary to ensure both practical relevance and scientific rigor [20]. Therefore, we follow a collaborative research approach with international business experts specializing in product development in the discrete manufacturing industry, as recommended by Österle and Otto [21]. In addition to our previous problem identification [15], we had the opportunity to involve additional domain experts from the discrete manufacturing industry.…”
