Investigations have been made to evaluate the development of Spodoptera littoralis as affected by feeding on a standard artificial diet containing powder of some plant species known to be resistant to the infestation of this insect. Trials were also made to find out whether the effect of these plants facilitate the potency of Bacillus thuringiensis var entomocidus HD-635 vs. the target insect. The results revealed that powders of pomegranate peel, guava leaves and lemon grass, greatly affected the insect development in terms of larval duration, larval and pupal weights, deformities in pupae and moths, percentage of emergence, egg production and hatching. This may be correlated to the chemical constituents of these plants. A marked increase was observed in the potency of B. thuringiensis endotoxin preparation vs. S. littoralis when combined with some of the tested powdered plants or its extracts but in varying degrees.

Les Euphorbiacees ont rang parmi !es 10 plus importantes familles angiospermes, ce qui deconseille de !es faire objet d'une etude "specialisee" a l'exces. Elles presentent en outre, des caracteres floraux et vegetatifs qui nullifient !es conventions du Iangage courant quant a Ia fleur a l'inflorescence, etc." ([1]: S. 188-189) Klassifikation Zahlreiche umfassende Studien, von welchen Bau der Blüten und Blütenstände (1, 2), Chromosomenzahlen (3), Pollenkörner (4), und serologische Reaktionen der Samenproteine (5) aufgeführt seien, resultierten in einem neuen Klassifikationsvorschlag (6) für diese außerordentlich vielgestaltige, aber keineswegs heterogene (i. e. unnatürliche [1]) Familie. Ethnobotanik Über eine Familie mit derartig vielen Nutz-, Medizinal-und Giftpflanzen existiert eine umfangreiche angewandt-botanische Literatur (vgl. Bd. VII, S. 67-119; für Nutzpflanzen beachte BRÜCHER, SIMMONDS und ZEVEN-DE WET aufS. 67 und 71; ferner MANSFELD, S. 715-751, 1871, 1881 von Ref. [1] sub Cucurbitaceae). Ergänzend zum Literaturverzeichnis in MANSFELD sei auf drei allgemeine Euphorbiaceenarbeiten (7-9), auf Euphorbia lancifolia (10), Hevea brasiliensis (11 ), einige Cassava ( = Manihot)-Arbeiten (12-18), Ricinus communis (19), Sauropus changiana (20) und auf Gattungen mit Brennhaaren (21, 22) hingewiesen. Chemische Merkmale Sie sollen nach kurzen allgemeinen Bemerkungen zu einzelnen Stoffklassen im Rahmen von Gattungen besprochen werden. Dabei sollen die Genera entsprechend den fünfUnterfamilienvon WEBSTER ( 6) gegliedert werden (vgl. Tabelle 181 ). a) Merkmale, deren Kombination die Bildung der 5 Hauptgruppen erlaubt. b) Innerhalb der 5 Hauptgruppen stark ausgeprägte Tendenzen (Ausnahmen mehr oder weniger häufig). c) Zahl der Kerne im reifen Pollen. d) Chromosomengrundzahlen. e) Merkmale der Samen (Endosperm, Caruncula etc.) und der Pollenwand tragen viel zur eindeutigen Abgrenzung der 5 Hauptgruppen bei.R.
