This study investigates the effects of desizing by heat cleaning on tensile properties of basalt-based mineral fibers. Two heat treatments, which lead to a complete removal of the sizing layer, were considered: one at low temperature (350°C) for a long time (10 h) and one at high temperature (600°C) for a short time (35 min). Desizing greatly affects tensile strength. High temperature and short time treatment conditions lead to the most severe strength degradation (66%). SEM micrographs reveal that failure originates from surface defects. Mechanisms responsible for strength loss were investigated by X-ray diffraction analyses, density measurements and differential thermal analyses. Strength degradation is ascribed to sizing layer removal and to thermally activated structural rearrangement of basalt.

In this article, the effects of elevated temperatures treatment (1358C and 3008C for 4 h) and immersion in distilled water or strong alkaline solution (pH 12.613) on the tensile properties of basalt fibers were investigated. As found, the elevated temperature treatment changed the short-distance order of the fibers, and thus reduced the tensile strength by 2.5% or 32.8% for 1358C or 3008C treated specimens, respectively. At the same time, the discreteness of the fibers was increased which was indicated by the shape parameters of the tensile strength according to the Weibull model. On the contrary, the tensile modulus was not affected by the studied elevated temperatures. Both distilled water and alkaline solution immersions brought in severe degradation in the tensile properties of the untreated and elevated temperature treated basalt fibers. Alkaline solution and high immersion temperatures showed more adverse effects on the degradation of the tensile properties. The basalt fibers immersed in distilled water suffered from etching, and the atom network of the basalt fiber were destroyed due to the hydrolysis of the SiAOASi bonds by hydroxyl ion. POLYM. Nano-microscale fracture mechanisms, which affect fracture toughness, play an important role in improving the impact characterization of fiber reinforced polymer composites. Therefore, crack behaviors are tried to be controlled with fracture mechanisms by filling nanoparticles into polymer matrix for improving impact characteristics and fracture toughness in latest studies. In this study, it was aimed to investigate the effects of SiO2 nanoparticles addition into epoxy matrix on the low velocity impact characteristics and fracture toughness in basalt fiber reinforced filament wound composite tubes. SiO2 nanoparticle of 4% wt. filled and unfilled ± [55]6 filament wound basalt fiber reinforced/epoxy composite tubes were subjected to low velocity impact tests at 5 J, 10 J, and 15 J of energy levels. It was seen that while the addition of nanoparticles were increasing the maximum impact forces in the range of about 19%–32%, displacements and absorbed energies decreased because of the increase in the bending stiffness. Charpy impact tests were performed to three different notched arc shaped specimens for determining the impact fracture toughness. SiO2 nanoparticles increased the fracture toughness by 20%–23%. It was observed that SiO2 nanoparticles delayed the formation of failures such as debonding and delamination, and reduced the fiber breakage branching in low velocity impact tests. A liquid penetrant test was used to inspect the crack formations and progressions on the impacted surfaces of all composite tubes as practical inspection for industrial applications. It was seen that microscope and SEM analysis supported the liquid penetrant inspection, which is a non-destructive testing method.
