Constitutive immune mechanisms: mediators of host defence and immune regulation

Abstract: The immune system enables organisms to combat infections and to eliminate endogenous challenges. Immune responses can be evoked through diverse inducible pathways. However, various constitutive mechanisms are also required for immunocompetence. The inducible responses of pattern recognition receptors of the innate immune system and antigen-specific receptors of the adaptive immune system are highly effective, but they also have the potential to cause extensive immunopathology and tissue damage, as seen in many… Show more

“…In contrast, constitutive innate immune mechanisms have the advantage of an immediate host defense against invading pathogens. A large number of constitutive mechanisms of innate immunity have been described including chemical barriers, antimicrobial peptides, basal autophagy or proteasomal degradation [ 2 ]. One drawback of these mechanisms is a lack of specificity.…”

“…In addition to peptides' sequence-based recognition features, numerous other factors such as costimulation, proliferation, cytotoxicity and cytokine production are evidently associated with immunogenicity 1 . These factors collectively define the magnitude and shape of the immune response and determine whether a response is elicited 10 . Consequently, identification of 'immunogenic' peptides has proven to be more challenging than identification of peptides presented by MHC molecules 11 .…”

“…At defined phases of the annual cycle, such as migration, molt, or reproductive activation, several measures were taken to assess immunity ( Versteegh et al, 2014 ). The study focused on constitutive immunity as a general, first line of defense, including against viral and bacterial pathogens ( Paludan et al, 2020 ). Most measures differed across the birds’ annual cycle, as well as between populations.…”
