Constraints and Prospects of rice Production in a Climate Change Context in the Sissili Province, Burkina Faso

Abstract: In terms of irrigated agricultural production in Burkina Faso, rice is the second most important crop after maize. This rice production is supposed to satisfy domestic demand and reduce imports, which has an impact on the country's trade balance. However, the rice sector is faced with climatic and technical productivity constraints. Indeed, the variability of temperatures and rainfall over the period 1988-2018, with its corollaries of drought and flooding episodes, has an impact on agricultural activity. The o… Show more

“…At country level, particularly in Burkina Faso, Bambara et al (2018) 6°C between 1956-1985 and 39.7°C between 1986-2015). In the province of Sissili, temperatures recorded at the Pô station from 1986 to 2018 show that the annual mean of the series is 28.4°C with a variation of +1.2°C, reflecting an increase in temperature in the area (Sanou & Dipama, 2022). In Botswana, higher maximum temperatures have an impact on the increased prevalence of diarrhoea in children (Alexander et al, 2013).…”

“…The negative effects of climate change can be mitigated by adaptation techniques such as high input delivery and use efficiency, variety, and improved agronomy [34]. Over the coming decades, yield growth can be sustained by expanding the scope of crop development investments and placing a greater emphasis on global changing variables [35].…”

“…Additionally, exploring broader agricultural effects, assessing the efficacy of climate-smart practices, and examining economic implications for food security and livelihoods are recommended. Investigating the relationship between extreme climate indices and sorghum yields across different climatic zones will provide valuable insights into enhancing sorghum resilience in climate change [51].…”
