Construct Validity of the Sentence Completion Test of Ego Development

Abstract: Evidence for the construct validity of the Sen tence Completion Test of Ego Development (SCT), some of it previously unpublished, is reviewed. The substantive component is substantiated both by in tuitive plausibility and by the fact that rating skill can be communicated through written instructions. Internal consistency is shown by alpha coefficients of about .85. Evidence for sequentiality is provided by studies showing cross-sectional gains with age during adolescence, similar profiles of item scores for ad… Show more

“…(A subsample was chosen because the labor-intensive methods used in the study necessitated limiting the number of participants.) A central variable in the adolescent phase of the study was ego development as measured on the Loevinger Sentence Completion Test (SCT; Loevinger, 1979). Adolescent ego development, as measured by the SCT, has been shown to predict young adult attachment coherence (Hauser, Gerber, & Allen, 1998), so we expected that choosing participants with a full range of SCT scores would yield a sample in which all three major attachment classifications were well represented.…”

“…The item sum score was used to represent level of ego development in the statistical analyses. The Sentence Completion Test has been found to have acceptable levels of internal consistency, test-retest reliability, and construct and discriminant validity (Hauser, 1976;Loevinger, 1979Loevinger, , 1985Redmore & Waldman, 1975 Positive life events-The Life Events Checklist (Johnson & McCutcheon, 1980), described earlier, was used to assess frequency of positive life experiences. …”
