“…Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied for many different applications in areas such as energy storage, catalysis, gas separations, chemical sensing, , biomedical imaging, and drug delivery. There is growing interest in polynuclear metal clusters as secondary building units (SBUs) for the formation of highly connected metal–organic frameworks such as UiO-66. The rare-earth (RE)-based MOFs with their unusually high coordination number readily form MOFs especially with dimers or chains. Interestingly, the addition of a modulator leads to higher-nuclearity RE clusters . Kitagawa and co-workers coined the term “coordination modulation” for monocarboxylic acid modulators to control the morphology of MOF crystals. , Organic carboxylic acids like benzoic, acetic, formic, and trifluoroacetic acid can compete with a linker for coordination to the metal.…”
