Constructing the meaning of quality of life for residents in care homes in the Lebanon: perspectives of residents, staff and family

Abstract: Moving nursing practice from task-based care to relationship-centred approaches was seen as pivotal in helping to develop quality of life for residents living in the participating care homes. The findings have implications for education, nursing practice and research in Lebanon and help start an evidence base for care.

“…A common theme in the observed literature is the shift from task-oriented care to relation-oriented care. Whereas health care institutions would previously focus primarily on performance-driven standardization of procedures, they are now also concerned about the quality of individualized care for patients (Burger et al, 2009 ; Cairns et al, 2013 ; Kinnear et al, 2014 ; Adra et al, 2015 ; Rodríguez-Martín et al, 2016 ). This shift in focus may well be due to the negative press reports that have criticized healthcare for being too impersonal over the last few years (e.g., Cairns et al, 2013 ; Kinnear et al, 2014 ).…”

“…Various sources suggest that maintaining personal relationships with patients has become an important part of caregiving (e.g., Kinnear et al, 2014 ; Adra et al, 2015 ). Although it is sometimes thought that these type of relationships develop naturally through daily care, Wilson and Davies ( 2009 ) suggest that the development of the type of relationship is actually controlled by the caregivers themselves.…”

“…Defining the abstract concept of respect in nursing care is challenging (Browne, 1993;Gallagher et al, 2008). This challenge could be one reason why respect has only been measured as part of other nursing concepts, such as the quality of care (Adra, Hopton, & Keady, 2015;Can, Akin, Aydiner, Ozdilli, & Durna, 2008); care satisfaction (Bowersox, Bohnert, Ganoczy, & Pfeiffer, 2013;Ferri et al, 2015); good nursing care (Leino-Kilpi, 1992); as a precondition of individualised care (Suhonen, Katajisto, & Välimäki, 2000); and measuring caring behaviours (Wolf, Miller, & Devine, 2003). For example, the Caring Behaviours Inventory CBI-24, developed by Wolf et al (2003), based on Jean Watson's Transpersonal Caring Theory (Watson, 1985), has one dimension (out of four) which measures respectful deference to others.…”

“…In Lebanon, an estimated 1.4 percent of its older population now lives in nursing homes (Naja, 2012). The issue of quality of life carries significant relevance for the residents of such homes; hence the emerging emphasis on issues that determine such factors (Adra et al, 2015).…”
