Construction and in vitro characterization of three-dimensional silk fibroinchitosan scaffolds

Abstract: The objective of this study was to discuss the construction method, characterization, and biocompatibility of three-dimensional silk fibroin-chitosan (SF-CS) scaffolds which met the requirements of bone tissue engineering scaffolds. Silk fibroin (SF) and chitosan (CS) were mixed at different ratios -3 to 7, 5 to 5, and 7 to 3-to fabricate the composite materials. To find out the optimum mixing ratio of SF and CS, parameters such as pore size, porosity, water absorption, and the mechanical properties were evalu… Show more

“…The compression modulus was defi ned as the slope of the initial linear part of the stress-strain curve. From 1% strain, a straight line was drawn parallel to the initial linear section of the curve, and the ordinate of the intersection with the stressstrain curve was taken as the compression strength 23) . The initial quality of each sample was recorded as m0, then the samples were placed in a 24-well culture plate and sterilized using a Co-60SQ(H)630 (Shanqiang Nuclear Radiation Engineering Technology, Beijing, China).…”

“…The scaff old was dried in an oven (Yuejin Medical Optical Instruments, Shanghai, China), and the dry weight was recorded as S2. The water absorption capacity was calculated as (S2 / S1 − 1) × 100% 23,24) . The compression strength and modulus were obtained by calculation of a stress-strain curve.…”

“…Optimum mechanical properties (pore size, tensile strength, etc.) and biocompatibility of the constructs are potential features to be considered for cell colonization and organization [ 17 ]. The presented work describes fabrication and characterization of scaffold for bone tissue engineering utilizing combination of beneficial properties of materials proposed for the same.…”
