Construction and Validation of an Animal-Human Continuity Scale

Abstract: A 12-item Animal-Human Continuity Scale with a Likert-type 7-option format was constructed to measure the extent to which the respondent views humans and animals in a dichotomous fashion vs. on a continuum. After the generation of items on a rational basis, item selection was based on ratings of content validity followed by item-total score correlation based on a sample of 88 graduate students, faculty and university staff participants. The scale contained such items as “Humans can think but animals cannot”, … Show more

“…A negative correlation was also found between PBQ grief and PBQ Anger, but not among these two constructs and PBQ Guilt items. In a previous study, Templer [21] reported negative correlations between education and AHCS Total and P-scale Total score. In line with the previous literature, our findings support the interpretation that highly educated people express lower levels of attachment, grief and anger.…”

“…The second part is composed of a combination of five questionnaires, namely the Pet Bereavement Questionnaire (PBQ) [6], the Lexington Attachment to Pets Scale (LAPS) [20], the Animal-Human Continuity Scale (AHCS) [21], the Positivity Scale (P-Scale) [22] and the Testoni Death Representation Scale (TDRS) [24], which, individually, have already been demonstrated to have good internal reliability. The Italian versions of PBQ, LAPS and TDRS have already demonstrated good factor structure and good construct validity (the degree to which all questionnaires are measuring appropriately) [24].…”

“…One area that has been largely left unexamined is the influence of a consumer's core values, particularly religiosity, on response to crimes against wildlife. Given that religion helps to explain how the world developed (Schmidt et al, 2014), including relationships between humans and animals (i.e., animal–human continuity; Templer et al, 2006), a consumer's level of religiosity should also inform support for crimes against wildlife. Prior research has shown that religious consumers often view consumption more with a dominion perspective where humans were given the authority to name and rule over animals (Johnson et al, 2017; van Bohemen et al, 2012; White, 1967).…”
