Construction of anhydrous two-step organosolv pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass for efficient lignin membrane-extraction and solvent recovery

Abstract: Glycerol organosolv (GO) pretreatment is revealed to be potent in selectively deconstructing the lignocellulosic biomass and effectively enhancing its enzymatic hydrolysis, but the conventional solid washing and GO lignin extraction processes frequently consume large amounts of water, resulting additionally in the difficulty of recycling the glycerol. In this study, an anhydrous two-step organosolv pretreatment process was explored, followed by the membrane ultrafiltration of glycerol lignin. Results showed th… Show more

“…3a). This can be owing to lignin degradation in the form of pseudo-lignin caused by the severe pretreatment condition, which would then precipitate on the substrate surfaces and hinder the adsorption of cellulase to fibers (Song et al, 2023b). Moreover, LHW pretreatment at higher temperatures (> 170 ºC) was beneficial for obtaining nearly complete enzymatic saccharification.…”

“…The process was observed to enrich lignin with reactive groups β-O-4 linkage and aliphatic groups. 89 The feedstock and catalyst's nature dictates the process's temperature. This pretreatment method eliminates lignin and generates hemicellulose and cellulose syrup of sugars C5 and C6.…”
