Construction of nursing knowledge in commodified contexts: A discussion paper

Abstract: This original article outlines a theoretical path and posterior critical analysis regarding two relevant matters in modern nursing: patterns of knowing in nursing and commodification contexts in contemporary health systems. The aim of our manuscript is to examine the development of basic and contextual nursing knowledge in commodified contexts. For this purpose, we outline a discussion and reflexive dialogue based on a literature search and our clinical experience. To lay the foundation for an informed discuss… Show more

“…Nursing knowledge underpins nursing practice. The empirical, ethical, esthetic, personal, and contextual patterns of nursing (Escobar-Castellanos & Sanhueza-Alvarado, 2018) extend nursing beyond the care relationship (sociopolitical, emancipatory, and organizational; Martínez-Rodríguez et al, 2020). In this context, nursing education should be based on critical pedagogical curricula that promote the values of equity and social justice through learning experiences with different social groups and situations of vulnerability (Velloso et al, 2020).…”

“…The quantitative phase, carried out from November 2020 to September 2021, is a descriptive cross‐sectional and observational study. Since there is little scientific literature analyzing the impact of health‐care commodification on health professionals (Martínez‐Rodriguez et al, 2020), we developed a self‐administered questionnaire based on Font Roja's job satisfaction survey (Aranaz, 1988). Font Roja's variables were adapted to the objectives of our research, specific to the context of our health system, and conceptualized according to patterns of knowledge in nursing (see Supporting Information 1, questionnaire ).…”
