Consumer preferences for electric vehicles: a literature review

Abstract: Widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) may contribute to the alleviation of problems such as environmental pollution, global warming and oil dependency. However, the current market penetration of EV is relatively low in spite of many governments implementing strong promotion policies. This paper presents a comprehensive review of studies on consumer preferences for EV, aiming to better inform policy-makers and give direction to further research. First, we compare the economic and psychological approach… Show more

“…In the latter literature stream, researchers have been mainly focusing on the barriers preventing consumers from adopting an electric car [16,20] to overcome them and provide recommendations to both car manufacturers and policy makers with the aim of finding ways to enhance AFV adoption.…”

“…Based on a recent literature review on consumer preferences for AFVs [16], studies regarding electric vehicle adoption can be basically classified into two major groups: studies of an economic type and of a psychological type. The first widely adopt the discrete choice analysis methodology, where consumers are required to make decisions between alternative vehicles based on the preference they hold for dissimilar cars' attributes, such as speed, recharging time, price, etc.…”

“…Various studies on consumer preferences for EVs have been conducted since the early 2000s. Liao, Molin, and van Wee () categorized factors affecting consumers' choice of the EVs into financial, technical, infrastructural, and policy attributes. However, we regard it more appropriate to consider the policy attributes of Liao et al () as financial or infrastructural attributes because the factors they categorized into policy attributes mainly include pricing policies such as reducing purchase tax, purchase price, usage cost, toll, and road tax, and polices regarding exclusive lane or parking for the EVs.…”

Instead of policy attributes, as environmental concerns increase globally, we introduce environmental attributes to examine how the environmental factors of the EVs such as GHG (mainly CO 2 ) emission reduction and pollution alleviation play important roles in consumers' decision to purchase the EVs.…”
