Consumer Strategies for Coping With Antipsychotic Medication Side Effects

Abstract: While the strategies proposed for each side effect differed, common themes included the maintenance of a balanced lifestyle, healthy eating and sleeping routines, and fostering a positive outlook on life. Understanding the strategies employed by consumers to deal with the adverse effects of their medications may help clinicians to engage more effectively with consumers in the discussion and management of side effects.

“…Despite this, half to three quarters of people prescribed with antipsychotic medication choose to stop taking it (McCann, Boardman, Clark, & Lu, ; Moritz et al., ; San‐Molina et al., ). There are a multitude of reasons why people cease taking antipsychotic medications, but these drugs have been shown to cause a range of side effects, including musculoskeletal, metabolic, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, endocrine, hematological, genitourinary, and neurological symptoms (Bell, Farmer, Ries, & Srebnik, ; Meehan, Stedman, & Wallace, ; Rababa'h & Alhmoud, ; Swarbrick & Roe, ; Tandon et al., ). There are significant differences in the side effects caused by individual medications, and two people on the same medication will experience different adverse reactions (Tyrer & Kendall, ).…”

“…Carers noted that it was crucial that the nurse play a supportive role and be a good communicator to both consumers and carers. The importance of communication and support for carers is consistently described in the mental health literature (McCann et al 2015;Meehan et al 2011;Rowe 2013). Carers frequently feel that their unique needs are not fully understood, let alone addressed by mental health services (Ewertzon et al 2011;Weimand et al 2013).…”
