Consumers attitudes toward animal welfare friendly produce: An island of Ireland study

Abstract: Public concern has arisen between increased productivity in animal production systems and farm animal welfare (FAW). Consumers demand ethical production systems and tend to purchase products that reflect their animal welfare concerns. They are becoming increasingly judicious, with growing expectations around animal produce. Nonetheless, positive attitudes concerning FAW do not always correspond to purchasing behavior, where higher concern is not related to higher purchasing frequency. “…While fertilizers used to increase production negatively affect soil, environment and biodiversity, the welfare of farm animals can be ignored in animal production systems. This situation causes consumers to demand more ethical and sustainable production systems such as organic production and tend to buy products obtained with this production system [56][57][58]. In the present study, it has been found that the sustainable consumption attitude had significant and positive effects on animal welfare and environment value, as expected.…”

“…Napolitano et al 38 emphasized the importance of providing consumers with accurate information about animal welfare-friendly production methods through effective labeling and scientifically validated monitoring systems to encourage willingness to pay more for animal-based products. However, farmers face the challenge that higher production costs to ensure better welfare standards are often not offset by higher market prices, as many consumers remain indifferent to animal welfare when purchasing animal-based products 39 . Nonetheless, maintaining good animal welfare standards is crucial not only for the economic success of farms, as shown in our results (Tables 4 , 5 , Fig.…”

“…This gap shows a possible mismatch between a person’s role as a citizen or as a consumer because their perceptions and priorities may diverge when considering societal issues versus personal consumption choices, and it may be explained with a multitude of reasons such as difficulty processing information, abrogation of responsibility to others, affordability, availability, etc. Understanding and addressing these discrepancies is crucial for effectively promoting sustainable behaviors and aligning individuals’ actions with their stated attitudes and values [ 19 , 20 ].…”
