Phyllostomids (New World leaf-nosed bats) are the ecologically most diverse bat family and have undergone the most extensive adaptive radiation of any mammalian family. However comprehensive, multi-species studies regarding phyllostomid echolocation are scarce in the literature despite abundant ecological research. In this study, we describe the call structure and interspecific variation in call design of 40 sympatric phyllostomid species from the Central Brazilian Amazon, focussing on general patterns within genera, subfamilies and between feeding guilds. All but one species utilized short, broadband FM calls consisting of multiple harmonics. As reported for other bat families, peak frequency was negatively correlated with body mass and forearm length. Twenty-five species alternated the harmonic of maximum energy, principally between the second and third harmonic. Based on PCA, we were unable to detect any significant differences in echolocation call parameters between genera, subfamilies or different feeding guilds, confirming that acoustic surveys cannot be used to reliably monitor these species. We present Ametrida centurio as an exception to this generalized phyllostomid structure, as it is unique in producing a mono-harmonic call. Finally, we discuss several hypotheses regarding the evolutionary pressures influencing phyllostomid call structure.

Folivory by bats is done mainly by leaf fractionation, i.e., the chewed leaves are turned into a bolus which is then pressed against these mammals’ palates to obtain the liquid fraction dispensing the fibrous portion. In this work, folivory by neotropical bats was analyzed by carrying out a bibliographic research in Web of Science, Google Scholar, and Capes Periodicals academic databases with the following keywords and combinations: “Folivory" and "Bats"; "Leaves" and "Bats"; "Chiroptera" and "Folivory", for all years available up to 2019. This research returned 25 articles, 65.3% of which were carried out in Brazil. Most of them are occasional (56%), i.e., in which the main object of study was not folivory. Among those, leaf-eating by bats was described for nine species of neotropical bats, and Artibeus lituratus (Olfers, 1818) was the most extensively investigated species. The consumption of leaves by bats was described for 17 plant species. Only two articles pointed out the classes (age, reproductive and sexual) of the bats feeding on leaves; three investigated the foraging time; seven the seasonality; three sought to explain the reasons that contribute to folivory; and only one carried out an analysis of the chemical composition of the leaves. The preference for a determined leaf age was reported in three studies, whereas the folivory site (specific leaf portions preferably consumed) was described in four. Despite the increasing number of studies on folivory, there are still many gaps that limit the understanding of the real role of this behavior in the ecology of neotropical bats.

Folivory in bats, the behavior of chewing bites of leaves to extract the liquid portion and discard the fiber as oral pellets, is seen as a strategy that might provide vitamins, micronutrients and proteins not always available in fruits, and even secondary metabolites (hormonal precursors) that stimulate/inhibit reproductive processes. While examining chewed leaves, we noticed an important amount of completely intact leaves below the roosts of Artibeus amplus and Artibeus lituratus, and decided to systematically quantify them during a year. We recovered 639 intact leaves from six plant species and found that both species are constantly feeding on leaves, but invariably leaving 26–78% of these intact, dropping them on the floor just below their roosting sites. These large proportions of dropped, intact leaves suggest a completely different, novel, non-nutritional use by bats. Several studies in birds have revealed that fresh leaves are effectively used in nests to control diverse organisms that include blood suckling ectoparasites, protozoans, fungus and bacteria. We report for the first time this biological control behavior performed by bats by selecting, bringing and dropping intact leaves below their roosting sites. The chemical properties of the leaves need to be investigated to reveal those active components against specific pathogens.
