Contact allergy to common ingredients in hair dyes

Abstract: Hair dyes are the prime cause of PPD allergy. PPD identifies the majority of positive reactions to PTD, p-aminophenol and m-aminophenol, but not all, which justifies additional testing with hair dye ingredients from the used product.

“…The process of permanent hair dyeing using oxidative dyes involves primary intermediates or precursors (PPD, toluene-2,5-diamine), developers (hydrogen peroxide, may contain ammonia) and couplers (resorcinol, 3-aminophenol and 4-aminophenol); and many of these compounds are present concomitantly in a hair dye mixture. 16,24,25 Additionally, the presence of ammonia in many hair colours could lead to the formation of ammonium salts and subsequent hyperpigmentation, in the absence of PPD reactivity. 23 Interestingly, in a recent study, oxidized PPD was eluted on a thin layer chromatography column, which was patch-tested, and quite a few studied patients also demonstrated sensitization to 4 0 -nitroaniline and 4,4 0 -azodianiline (structurally similar to Bandrowski's base); two PPD-oxidation products in addition to PPD itself.…”

“…Aminophenols as developers or coupling components are key compounds that react with oxidation bases like PPD and are of importance in coloration [29]. Application of semi-synthetic hair dye showed slight erythema and edema, but sites applied with synthetic hair dye exhibited considerable erythema and edema.…”

“…Hair dyes are the prime cause of para-phenylenediamine allergy [21] and have been reported as causes of (sometimes) severe dermatitis in children as well [2,22,23], not only in those primarily sensitized by hair dye application but particularly in subjects previously sensitized by temporary henna tattoos, which became very popular in the Western world. In contrast to the body pastes used by Hindus and Muslims, consisting solely of henna, many of them did illegally contain high concentrations (up to 30 % or more!)…”
