Contact dermatitis in patients undergoing serial intravitreal injections

Abstract: The most common causal allergen was phenylephrine, being positive in 56% of patients. Patients most likely become sensitized because of the high frequency of usage of phenylephrine during repeated intravitreal injections and follow-up consultations.

“…Approximately 90% of the uveitis and iritis cases were mild to moderate, and were treated with a course of topical corticosteroids or antibiotics, and most resolved with no sequelae [ 8 ]. Viramme et al has studied sixteen cases of EACD after intravitreal injections and have been published [5]. The allergens were phenylephrine (9/16), isobetadine ophthalmic solution (5/16) and sodium metabisulfite (3/16), and none of these were directly related to anti intravitreal injections -VEGF.…”
